Sentinel

Three columns rising from one plate at different heights, each alternating closed form with open frame, so black mass appears to rest on nothing every second or third step. Turned cubes interrupt the rhythm before it becomes mechanical. Walk around it and the composition dismantles and rebuilds, so there is no correct elevation and no moment where the work is finished being looked at. Standing free on the floor it edits movement — people arc around it rather than cut past, and that curve becomes part of the plan. A sentinel does not block a threshold. It stands beside one and makes it a threshold, and this piece does the same thing to a hallway: where there was a way through, there is an arrival. At around 160 cm it meets a standing adult at eye level, which is the difference between an object somebody looks down at and a presence somebody stands beside.

Finish: Matte black on the closed forms. Brushed and light-catching on the open frames and the plate. Weighted base, braced through the load path, joints concealed.
