TondoLiminal HorizonLiminalBalance

The Feminine Archetypes — Moon, Bloom & Form : Artwork 6

In Japanese classical poetry — the waka and haiku traditions — the liminal zone is the site of the most significant aesthetic experiences: the boundary between day and night, between summer and autumn, between sea and sky, between sleep and waking. The ma — the pause, the interval, the space between — is where meaning condenses in Japanese aesthetics, more present in the gap than in the elements on either side of it. The woman in this composition inhabits exactly that zone: neither the sky where the crane moves nor the ocean that rises around her feet, but the exact horizon between them. In waka tradition, this is the position of the one who can see both worlds without belonging entirely to either, the position of the poet and the contemplative. The tondo frame holds this liminal moment without resolving it — the crane has not left, the sea has not risen further, the woman has not moved.
