The Feminine Archetypes — Moon, Bloom & Form : Artwork 1

The garden in Ottoman and Persian visual culture was never simply a natural space. It was a cosmological proposition: the garden as paradise, the word for garden (pardis in Persian, jannat in Arabic) being the same word used for both earthly pleasure and divine reward. The Safavid court miniature tradition placed the female figure within the garden because the garden was already feminine — in Persian lyric poetry the garden is both the space the beloved inhabits and the metaphor for the beloved herself, until the distinction between the two collapses entirely. The Ottoman rumi-scroll ornament that frames this composition was developed in the imperial ateliers of the sixteenth century as the vocabulary of sacred and courtly space simultaneously — the decorative system that covered mosques and palace interiors without distinguishing between them. This piece draws on four traditions — Persian figure, Ottoman surround, Japanese surface technique, the universal circular mandala form — not because they have been assembled, but because they independently arrived at the same argument: the sacred, the beautiful, and the natural are three names for one thing.
