The Examined Life

The Examined Life : Artwork 3

Three words. Perhaps the most radical philosophical claim ever compressed into them. The Chandogya Upanishad — one of the oldest texts in human philosophical history, composed around 800 BCE — uses this sentence as the culmination of a teaching in which a father explains to his son, through a series of patient examples, what the ultimate reality is. The climax of the lesson is always the same three words: that thou art. The Atman — the innermost self, the witness behind all experience — is identical to Brahman, the ground of all existence. Not similar to it. Not an expression of it. Identical. This is the most challenging claim in the Vedantic tradition because it is not asking you to believe something about God — it is asking you to recognise something about yourself. The piece belongs to the same conversation as Cogito Ergo Sum across the collection: where Descartes found the self as the irreducible minimum, the Upanishad found the self as the irreducible maximum. A study, meditation space, or living room for someone who takes the oldest questions seriously.
