Symbols of Reverence — Ritual & Devotion : Artwork 9

In ancient Egypt, the amulet was not a decorative object — it was understood as a functional one, an object whose form contained protective power. The Wedjat amulet was among the most widely produced in the entire Egyptian material record, found on mummies, in foundation deposits, on prow paintings of boats, and worn by the living. The remarkable thing the amulet tradition demonstrates is that the protective function was understood to reside in the form itself, not in its scale, material, or elaboration: a tiny faience Wedjat found on a boat owner had the same function as the carved stone eye on the pylon of a temple. This piece tests that logic at the opposite end of the scale — the symbol at maximum size, stripped to its essential silhouette, the eye form and the characteristic falcon-cheek marking that distinguishes it from any other eye symbol in any other tradition. The authority that remains at this scale is the authority of the form itself.
