Symbols of Reverence — Ritual & Devotion : Artwork 8

In New Kingdom Egypt, the Eye of Horus and the Eye of Ra were not equivalent symbols — the theological distinction between them was significant and carefully maintained. The Eye of Horus (Wedjat) was the restored eye, the symbol of healing and wholeness. The Eye of Ra was the active, solar eye: the instrument through which the sun god directed his power, sent outward to protect, to judge, and when necessary to destroy. The winged form here aligns with the Ra tradition — the wings are solar falcon wings, the vehicle of Ra's outward reach. In New Kingdom temple reliefs, the winged disc appeared above every entrance to mark the threshold as divinely protected. The hard-edged geometric treatment in this piece draws from the same New Kingdom stone carving tradition, where the hieroglyphic register demanded absolute precision: every form legible, every symbol correct.
