Symbols of Reverence — Ritual & Devotion : Artwork 5

Krishna and Radha in the Venugopal posture — Krishna playing the bansuri flute, Radha inclined toward the sound, both figures locked in the tribhanga stance where the body bends three ways at ankle, hip, and shoulder simultaneously. The peacock feather crown and the long-tressed Radha form create an asymmetric composition that has been the governing image of Vaishnava devotional art since Jayadeva composed the Gita Govinda in the twelfth century. The Yugala concept is not a romantic convention but a cosmological statement: Radha and Krishna are understood as the same divine reality experienced from two different sides of longing.
