Symbols of Reverence — Ritual & Devotion : Artwork 17

The question of how to represent enlightenment — a state defined precisely by its transcendence of all the conditions that make representation possible — is the central problem of Buddhist sacred art. The historical Buddha was a man who attained a state that, by Buddhist definition, cannot be described. The iconographic traditions that developed across India, Southeast Asia, Tibet, China, and Japan over two millennia each found different formal strategies for depicting a presence that resists depiction. One of the most sophisticated is to make the body itself permeable: not a solid form that defines an interior, but a field of cells through which light passes — the boundary between the body and its surroundings dissolved rather than drawn. This is the strategy here. The canonical silhouette is exact; what fills it is not mass but openness. What is being depicted is not a body that achieved enlightenment but enlightenment that has taken, provisionally, a body's shape.
