A ballerina on pointe, one arm raised to hold the stem of a large lily whose vine continues upward out of the frame — the dancer and the plant sharing the same vertical axis, the same upward reach. The tutu hem is edged in delicate leaf-form cutwork, so the botanical and the dancer are in formal conversation at the point where the body meets the ground. In the Romantic ballet tradition, the ballerina frequently represented nature itself — not a woman performing but a natural force given form. This piece makes that idea literal: she is the stem, the flower is the extension of her arm.
