Body in Motion : Artwork 3
An Indian classical dancer identifiable by the mudra hand gesture raised above the head and the full circular ghaghra skirt rendered in radial spoke-and-perforation cutwork — the spinning skirt as moving mandala. The figure breaks out of its portrait frame at the crown, which activates the composition and prevents it from reading as static. In Bharatanatyam and Kathak, the two classical traditions this form most closely references, dance is not performance but nritya — a devotional act addressed to the divine. The piece holds cultural specificity without exclusivity, and carries real resonance in the GCC context where South Asian artistic traditions are deeply embedded in the cultural landscape.
