Arabesque Thresholds : Artwork 8
There is a category of aesthetic experience that complete objects cannot produce: the fragment. Architectural fragments — pieces of carved stone, sections of tilework, portions of ornamental ceiling — carry an authority that the complete original often cannot, because the break reveals the interior logic of the thing: how it was built, how it held together, what the geometry looked like before it was a finished surface. The archaeological record of Islamic architecture is largely composed of such fragments, and some of the most important art-historical discoveries about how Muqarnas systems were constructed have come from pieces, not from intact buildings. This fragment format is therefore not a modernist gesture but a historically authentic one — it is how much of this architecture has been encountered and studied for centuries.
