Arabesque Thresholds : Artwork 2
A full-circle Zellige field built outward from a twelve-pointed star — the same tiling ratio used on the courtyard floors of the Bou Inania Madrasa in Fez, laid in hand-cut terracotta and ceramic over years in the fourteenth century. The scalloped outer boundary is not a design choice: it is where the pattern would keep going if the wall had no edge. In Zellige tradition the incompleteness of a tiled field at its border is understood as part of the work — a reminder that the pattern is, in principle, infinite. At scale, the piece casts a complex shadow field that changes completely as the light moves around it.
