After the Storm

After the Storm : Artwork 2

Japanese farmers observed, over centuries, that the earth does not weaken after rain — it compacts and solidifies, becoming more reliable underfoot than it was before the storm. This agricultural fact became a philosophical principle: adversity does not damage what is genuine, it reveals and strengthens it. The proverb carries none of the sentimentality that Western resilience language often has — it does not say you will grow from difficulty or that pain is a gift. It makes a simpler and more reliable claim: the thing that can be hardened by rain will be hardened by rain. The emphasis falls on after — not during the falling, not while it is wet and uncertain, but after, when the ground is tested and found to be more solid than before. In the context of the After the Storm collection, this is the piece about a difficulty that has already passed, and the room that hangs it is for someone taking stock of what they have found they are made of.
